The view as you paddle away from the launch site and 20 bridge.
If you examine the Cascade Range that surrounds you, you'll notice
that the environs change as elevation increases. You can see
thick forest, subalpine meadows and a tree line above which nothing
grows.

The mountains may be grand in scale, but it's subtlety that flavors
this trip. This small cave was found in the canyon rock walls,
not too far from the launch site.

The cold is always a factor. The above picture was taken in
early August, the height of summertime in the North Cascades.
Still, the leaves on this tree were already changing.

Rocky points are found along the steep canyon walls. Trees and
plants cling to life anywhere they can.

As you reach the main lake body you are greeted by a grouping of
partially submerged rocks.

Look closely at the top of this rock. As unlikely as it may
be, a single solitary flower is blooming in the exposed, cold and
windswept conditions. Nature's remarkable resolve is seen
everywhere at Diablo Lake.

Venturing further into the main lake there are rugged islands.
They provide sharp contrast the smooth iridescent green waters.

Paddle around the islands. It's fascinating to observe how rock
subtly fade into the foggy abyss.

Rock outcroppings continue below the waterline.
Paddling allows you to intimately experience nature. Nowhere
is this more so than Diablo Lake.
