DIRECTIONS TO PENNEKAMP PARK
From Florida City
(south of Miami) take US1 south (approximate 25 miles) until you reach
Key Largo. Stay on US 1 south (the Overseas Highway) until you
reach mile marker 103. Look for John Pennekamp Coral Reef State
Park on your left at mile marker 102.5.
Note:
This page contains several high resolution, large size
photographs. As such this
these
pictures may take extra time to download, especially with a dial-up
internet connection. If some pictures are

This picture shows the entrance signs
to John Pennekamp Park along US 1 in Key Largo. Keep your
eyes open. Things are surprisingly easy to miss as you drive
along the Overseas Highway. Look for the brown sign above US
1. You'll find the park entrance on
the southeast side of US 1 at mile
marker 102.5.
This picture shows the ranger
station entrance to John
Pennekamp State Park. Florida's State Park system charges a per
vehicle and a per person fee to enter the
park.
If you have purchased a Florida State Park annual pass at
another park it won't be good here. Monroe County somehow has the
right to charge extra for Florida State Parks located in the Keys.
Canoe and kayak rental
building. If you would like to rent a kayak or canoe, park
in the main visitor parking lot. Walk
past the visitor center and over to the marina area. Locate the
marina by following the signs to the "boat tours".
Stop in and ask
for a Canoe Trail map.
Pennekamp Park features canoe
and kayak
rentals located on the north end of the marina area.
Rental paddle boats are launched from
the dock area you see here.
If you bring your own canoe or
kayak, there are two good places to put in at Pennekamp. The
first launch site is the power boat ramp located in the
marina area.
This launch site requires that you deal with power boats in the marina
area
and in the motorboat channel (until you reach the canoe trail.) Click here if you
would like to know more about the boat ramps at John Pennekamp State
Park.
A quieter alternative is the second launch site at Mangrove
Trail. To find it, dive past the Visitor Center area towards the
Park's "Far Beach." The launch site is located immediately next
to the start of the Mangrove Trail
wooden hiking path.
The launch site is simply a cut in
the mangroves. Wear foot protection... the rocks in this
area can
be tough on your feet.
The Mangrove Trail
launch site lets out directly on the 2.5 mile long
Pennekamp Canoe Trail.
This
map shows the facilities at
John Pennekamp Park.
Note the location of the "Canoe/Kayak
Area" on the north end of
the marina (center of map.) This is where you rent canoes and
kayaks.
Also note the location of the "Kayak
Launch" on the map's right
side. This is the Mangrove
Trail launch site highlighted above.

This rough map
shows how the 2.5 mile long Pennekamp Park Canoe Trail winds through
the mangrove
estuaries. The two asterisks indicated the launch sites featured
mentioned above.
The canoe trail is seen above as the narrow waterways. The
larger canals and the marina are shared with motorboats.

necessary,

for you to see. Click here
